SOME DETAILS
Did you know that about 3.7 trillion apples are squandered each year? Actually almost half of all fruits and vegetables produced worldwide are wasted, as well as one-third of all food produced globally, amounting to a staggering 1.3 billion tons of food, an economic burden of nearly $940 billion annually. At the same time, hunger continues to afflict millions.
Beyond the economic consequences, mismanagement of food also has a dire impact on our climate, accounting for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shockingly, the environmental costs of food waste surpass those of many major industries – flying, plastic production, and even oil extraction.
SOME DETAILS
In fact, if food waste were a nation, it would rank as the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gasses, trailing only behind the United States and China. Eliminating global food waste could save a staggering 4.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually, the equivalent of taking one in four cars off the road. These startling statistics underscore the urgency of addressing food waste as a crucial element in our battle against climate change and global hunger.
But what exactly causes the problem? And how can we deal with it?
Go ahead and watch the video to develop a deeper understanding on the topic of food waste.
