SOME DETAILS

Living in the 21st century, we often forget that the world hasn’t always been as we know it. There was a time when people were not fortunate enough to enjoy electricity for example, or cars as well as public transportation. Everything that surrounds us and fills our lives has its history and its beginning. The same goes for spices, which are an indispensable part of our cuisine and play an invaluable role in shaping our taste buds from our earliest childhood, without us even thinking about it. Taking every exotic taste and aroma for granted, we never think about where it all came from and how it came to be that today the kitchen cupboard is filled with so many and such a variety of spices. We tried to answer this question in the new short video from our educational channel – Knowledge Spree. Together with the creators of the “Monuments, Museums, and Mojitos” podcast, we embarked on an adventure exploring the history behind some of the most beloved spices, such as vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and of course, sugar.

SOME DETAILS

In its long and tumultuous journey through the centuries, spices have been an extremely valuable currency of exchange and have played a key role in shaping state borders, defining national policies and priorities. Allegedly harmless spices have been the cause of many wars and, due to their enormous importance in people’s lives, they have been a major “player” in shaping the world economy, as well as in the unfolding of the industrial revolution.

Indeed, we rarely think about the past of humanity and the stages it had to go through so that today we can calmly drink our coffee on the balcony. But we believe it’s good to do it from time to time.. Only then can we realize the price that has been paid over the centuries, appreciate where we are and be grateful for the comforts that make up our modern way of life.

We invite you to embark on this wonderful adventure for just 6 minutes of screen time, because we believe it is worth it.
